Rights Respecting School
Walthamstow Primary Academy has achieved silver status and is now a silver accredited school, we value the power of education as paramount to a child’s social and cultural development. We have implemented a variety of articles from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child that focus on a child’s right to education as key to promoting democracy, tolerance, inclusion and economic growth. We are proud of the pupil participation and great response to raising awareness of local, national, and global events.
Pupils learn regularly about their rights with a strong focus on the following articles:
Article 3: The best interests of the child must be a top priority in all decisions and actions that affect children.
Article 14: Every child has the right to think and believe what they choose and to practise their religion, as long as they are not stopping other people from enjoying their rights. Governments must respect the rights and responsibilities of parents to guide their child as they grow up.
Article 28: Every child has the right to an education. Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child. Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.
The Right to an Education is one of the most important principles in becoming a Rights Respecting School. Articles 28 and 29 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Article 28 says that “State Parties recognise the right of children to education” and “should take all appropriate measures to ensure that school discipline is administered in a manner consistent with the child’s human dignity.”
We have an Article 12 Ambassadors Rights Respecting Steering Group; who are involved in all matters affecting themselves and their peers. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) forms the basis for all our work here at Walthamstow Primary Academy, including our campaigning. To date, we have held campaigns to raise awareness of local, national and global issues to equip our pupils with a better understanding of their rights and those of children across the world.
The Rights - Respecting Values underpin everything that we do at Walthamstow Primary Academy and In doing so we prepare our pupils with the skills, attributes and knowledge for achieving the best in everyone.
